Annie Pootoogook Poem

About mid-morning last January, I got a call about this.


My poem, Annie Pootoogook, won the 2016 Banff Centre Bliss Carman Poetry Award Contest. It feels so very hard to believe, and I’m so looking forward to having Annie’s story shared when the full poem is published in Prairie Fire‘s summer edition. Until then, here’s an excerpt.

This news was so bittersweet. Of course, it was an honour my poem was chosen, but the poem became because renowned Cape Dorset artist Annie Pootoogook had a tragic life, and death. My hope, with all my journalism and journalism-poetry, is that storytelling means remembering means knowing means trying means changing…
